Top Reasons To Use Promotional Products

Promotional Products are so popular because THEY WORK!

They provide value in so many different ways that it's nearly impossible to find another marketing method that offers a similar return on investment.

Below you'll find a list of reasons to add swag to your marketing mix:

Brand Awareness / Recognition

The more people that know about your business, the more opportunities you'll have to sell your products or services. Repetition is key because we are so bombarded with marketing messages in today's society that seeing a business name or logo once may not even register in our memory but, the more exposure the person has to your brand, the more likely they are to become your customer.

There are, what seems to be, an infinite number of ways to promote your business. Most of them cost money and, for most of them, it's very difficult to measure their effectiveness.

Unless your company has the means to hire a marketing team to structure and implement a formal marketing strategy, and continuously measure the metrics to determine your return on investment, you could be wasting your marketing dollars.

The goal is to find a way to get your business name in front of the most people possible for the least amount of money possible. Of course, there's more to marketing than that, but that's the general idea.

Promotional products are an effective and inexpensive way to do this.

Human beings love to interact with each other. If someone has a promo product with your business name on it, the people they interact with are going to be reminded of your business name every time they see that person with that product. The amount of brand recognition you can achieve by giving just one promotional item to someone can be huge!

Providing a quality promotional item with your company logo on it to employees and/or customers, that they can and want to use, will continue to effectively advertise your brand indefinitely.

Value / Return on Investment

Advertising is expensive and for a lot of it, the benefits are generally short lived.

Unless you have the budget to continuously run advertisements on various platforms, it's hard to get traction and see real results. With most forms of advertising, you need repetition in order for people to take notice and remember your brand. The trouble with most forms of advertising is that the more ads you run, the more it costs.

With promotional products, it's the opposite. You pay for the ad (the product) once, and it can be viewed an infinite number of times and the cost will never increase. In fact, if you really want to get analytical, the cost per impression actually goes down the more exposure the item gets!

Of course, for the promotional item to do it's job effectively, the product needs to be of good quality so that it will last. Also, the item needs to be useful for the person receiving it so that they actually use it and show it off to their peers, therefore, increasing awareness of your brand.

Social Proof

When one person sees another person wearing or using a product that has a company name or logo on it, they assume that the person supports that business and is pleased with the service they've received from that company.

The person may not have even done business with the company. They may have gotten that product from a thrift store, won it at a corporate or social event, or even received it as a gift from a friend, but the perception is that the company is a good.

The association is that "if other people are using their services, I can too!"

Seeing your company name on an item that someone else owns means there's a really good chance that the person will consider your company the next time they are in need of the product or service you provide.

The Law Of Reciprocity

The Law of Reciprocity says that if someone does something nice for you, you have a psychological need to do something nice for them in return. Sometimes you may even choose to do something even more gracious.

Ever notice how servers at most restaurants give you mints or something when they bring you the cheque? Do you think they do that because your breath stinks? Nope. They're using the law of reciprocity to hopefully earn a nice tip. They do something nice for you (bring free mints) and hopefully you'll respond with a healthy tip.

This law can be used the right way and the wrong way so you need to be careful. You don't ever want the gift to come across as a sleazy bribe.

Giving promotional gifts to employees to thank them for their efforts, or to customers to show appreciation for their business, is a positive way to use the Law of Reciprocity...and will most likely result in continued, or even improved, behavior by the recipient.

Employee Engagement

Employees perform better when they feel appreciated and feel like they are a part of the team. Who doesn't like to feel like they belong??

Giving promotional items to employees is a great way to improve employee morale and increase engagement and it doesn't need to break the bank. Acknowledging an employee with something as simple as a custom coffee mug or a water bottle can make the employee feel loved and create a strong team environment around the workplace.

If the product is useful and good quality then the employee will actually keep the item and use it. If it's cheap junk, then it will most likely spend it's days buried in a junk drawer somewhere and will be a waste of money for the employer. The employee will still appreciate the gesture but the benefit will be short lived.

If the product can be used outside of the office (hat, sweater, bag, water bottle, etc) the employer can grow their brand recognition at the same time as showing appreciation to their employees; win-win!

Finding, and keeping, good employees can be a real challenge. Paying them more money is not always the answer but making them feel loved and appreciated has a huge effect on employee retention. When people love coming to work, it's less likely that they'll be spending time on the internet scrolling through job listings. Promotional gifts are a great, inexpensive way to build a team.

**Quick tip for employers** - If you want employees to use/wear the promotional products outside of work in order to get extra brand exposure, make sure the products are nice, of good quality and functional. Many business owners believe that they'll gain more exposure by using bright colors and large print logos on the promotional products they order because it will grab more attention for their brand. This has proven to be a mistake in most cases as people won't want to wear/use the products. The whole point is to get exposure. You won't get exposure if the T-shirts you gave your employees, for example,  never get worn.

Customer/Client Appreciation

Similar to employee engagement, giving a promotional product as a gift to a client or customer makes them feel like they're part of the team also. It's a friendly gesture...and who doesn't like doing business with people they consider to be friends? Also, if the client has a good relationship with your company, they will refer everyone they know to you!

Handing out freebies every now and again can easily, and inexpensively, make a good client relationship turn into a great one and help your business really stand out among the competition. It adds that little extra value to the relationship.

Of course, you'll also get the benefit of the brand exposure every time your customer wears/uses the promo product you gave them when they are around other people.

Top Uses For Promo Products

Of course, the main function of a promotional product is to promote your business, organization, or event.

There are several different ways to use these types of products to promote your business:

Employee Appreciation

Giving a promotional gift to an employee makes them feel like they're accepted and part of the team...and when they use/wear the product, it helps promote your business.

Whether the gift is a welcome gift when they first start with your company, a retirement gift when they leave or any reason in between, they are always appreciated.

Employee Rewards

Promotional products are often used as incentives to encourage performance and then as rewards for the exceptional performance.

Employees who earns these rewards love to show them off to their peers. Win-win again because the employee feels great about their reward and the company's name is visible to everyone they show it to.

Customer / Client Appreciation

Same as employee appreciation, when clients receive a gift, it personalizes the relationship they have with your business and encourages future business dealings...and it helps promote your business when they use or wear the product.

Customer / Client Rewards

Free gift with purchase is always an enticing offer.

If the consumer was going to purchase the product anyway, might as well purchase it from the place that gives them a free gift! Or if they were on the fence about making the purchase, a free gift might just be the nudge they need to go for it!

Some businesses like to implement a rewards system where the customer can earn different items based on the volume of business they do with the company. Most of the time, with these types of programs, the products offered as rewards aren't customized with the company name or logo on them but that doesn't mean you can't.

Event Give-Aways

It's not a trade show if the attendees don't walk out of there with a huge bag of swag...it's like Halloween for adults!

People love free stuff and if the promo item you're handing out is useful, people will keep it and use it...therefore, promoting your business for you.

Charitable Donations

Supporting your favorite charity is always rewarding and supplying the charity with your promotional items is a great way to help out.

Whether the products will be used by the charity itself in their efforts, sold to raise additional funds, or used as fundraising prizes, it's a win-win situation for all. The charity benefits and your company is promoted at the same time.

Ways To Use Promotional Items

There are a couple of different ways to use promotional products.

We refer to the as User-Based and Company-Based.

User-Based is when the promo strategy involves choosing products with the end user in mind.

A Company-Based strategy is when the promo items are focused on the image or theme of the business or organization.

For example, a Guitar store might give away guitar tuners with their logo imprinted on them if they were using a user-based strategy. If they were going for a company based strategy, they might give away a guitar shaped keychain or stress ball.

The user-based product is useful to the recipient and they will most likely keep it and use it for a long time, whereas, the company-based products are a little more likely be put in a drawer or the dog will chew it up within a short time.

It's not that either strategy is better than the other, it just depends on what you are hoping to accomplish with your swag plan.

The Promotional Products Process

A certain amount of thought and planning is required before placing an order for promo items.

Promotional products shouldn't be regarded as a thoughtless expense used as a tax write off; they are an investment in the growth and future success of your business.

Swag can be one of the most cost effective forms of marketing...if it's done right.

Planning

When you're considering investing in promo products, you need to ask yourself some questions;

Who will be receiving the items?

Will you give them to your employees to show appreciation? or Customers as a thank you? or will the promo products be handed out at as freebies at public events?

What do you hope they'll do with them?

If you're gifting to your employees, do you want them to use the items while their at work or outside of work? If you're giving to your customers, do you hope they'll use the products in their business life or personal life?

What are those people generally interested in?

If the items will be given to customers to be used in their work environment, what will be useful to them? If the customer works with computers, it probably doesn't make a lot of sense giving them a custom notebook.

What message are you wanting to send with the promo product?
Are you wanting the recipient to think of your company as light hearted with a sense of humor? Or do you want your company to be portrayed as a premium brand?

These are just some of the things to think about when planning your swag campaign.

We are more than happy to help you with this step.

Budgeting

It sure would be nice if money was no object, but unfortunately that's not the case for most of us.

Of course it's important to have a budget in mind during the planning phase, but because there are literally thousands of different promotional products available, there's usually a way to accomplish your goals on almost any budget.

Like all marketing tactics, it's hard to know which promotional product will be the best bang for your buck. Promo products make it especially hard to measure ROI because as long as the product is useful, and of good quality, it could be out there generating business for your company for years!

Once we know what the plan is, and the budget we have to work with, we can put together a bunch of ideas and decide which one(s) make the most sense.

Product Review

Okay so let's say we've decided that the right promo item for your company is a personalized coffee/tea mug. Your recipients will love it, we can fit the order into your budget, etc.

There are thousands of different options when it comes to mugs.

What kind of mug do you want? Ceramic? Stoneware? Stainless steel? Thermal? With handle or without?

What color do you want? Solid color? Two tone? Matte finish? Glossy finish?

What size do you want? 11 oz? 12? 15? 18?

I think you get where I'm going here.

The plan we made before getting to this stage will point us in the right direction of which mug will best suit our needs.

A black, matte finish, ceramic mug gives an impression of a premium product or service, whereas a glossy bright colored mug gives off fun, happy, positive vibes.

Because selecting the right product is so important to the success of your swag efforts, it's important that we work together on this...as opposed to you trying to figure this out yourself online.

Quotes

Once we have narrowed down the selection to a few, we'll put together some quotes.

There are a few parts to producing a promotional product.
  • There's the cost of the raw product itself with no decoration on it.
  • Then there's the decorating costs. Decorating refers to whatever method is used to add your company's logo and/or message to the product. This might include screen printing, embroidering, embossing, debossing, etching, sublimation, heat transfer or some other methods.
  • Depending on the product, the supplier and the decorating method, there may be a set up charge. This is a cost that decorators charge to prepare their equipment to produce your product.
  • There are usually shipping charges to account for.
  • Finally those darn taxes.

All costs will be fully disclosed to you before you make your decision.

There are never any hidden costs.
